Beers Of The Beano - Wednesday 11 September 2024

Under pressure from the local council, the 50 bus from Caerphilly to Newport now starts early. At 06:12 to be precise. So, with a midweek Emergency Beano, it was time to try it out.

It was dark and cool and crisp. The chill of Autumn has already arrived with an overnight low of 8c / 46f. The Sunflowers outside the Co-op are already feeling the cold.

I didn’t damage the bus stop. The bus was one minute late which isn’t bad for Stagecoach. So off to Newport and first stop in Costa.

Good Day Internet, the longer Patreon version of The Daily Tech News Show and a warming Costa Meal Deal to get the body going. I touch of reconnaissance and off to The John Wallace Linton for some serious Beanoing.

The 08:00 rush has now passed. Guest Ales still at £1.69 a Pint. So mostly filling my boots. Starting with…

You can’t beat a big foaming head. Well, you can but that would involve any oversized glass.

The review

Anthem - St Austell - 3.8% ABV. B+, light, a little thin, pleasantly malty and fruit with a pleasing bitterness on the finish #ale #beer #bier

3/5. The coolness of Autumn is already here. My Tomatoes are suffering. Meanwhile £1.69 a Pint and the world is gentle.

Spotted a craft can at the back of one of the fridges. The problem was, finding it on the till, so I could pay for it. However, another unique for my stats.

A poured can of Tropical Assassin from Rooster's Brewing

Yay, for my stats

The review

Tropical Assassin - Rooster’s Brewing - 6.1% ABV. B++, big on the nose. Malty, fruity, tropical and very Mandarin Orange forward #ale #beer #bier

3.5/5. Hidden at the back of the fridge and then a struggle to find it on the till. Well worth it at £3.45 and I had the last one.

Moving on, this time to the Carpenters.

The frontage of The Carpenters Arms Newport

The WiFi seems to be faster too.

Beating the queue. It opens at 10:00 and even if it looks like it hasn’t, it is.

Mostly Keg but there is some Cask

The far end of the bar, where the box is, is where all the action is.

Keg Weird Dad

I’m not altogether sure I’ve has Weird Dad on Keg before. Tidy brew.

The review

Socks and Sandals - Weird Dad - 4.2% ABV. B+ and a bit. Malty, fruity and I’m getting hints of Jam. Tingly, fruity finish #ale #beer #bier

3.3/5. What I would normally have on Cask is on Keg and it totally works. In Newport, drinking Newport. Carpenters.

For number two thinking I hadn’t had it before, I had.

The Tap and a Pint of Off Menu IPA from Camden Brewery

Beware glasses that say Beer

The review

Off Menu IPA - Camden Town - 5.8% ABV. B+, think this one has seen better days. All a bit spicy and fruity #ale #beer #bier

Chips next

The frontage of The Harbour Fish Bar Newport

Regular Chips are now £3.00

Down the hill to The Lamb

The frontage of The Lamb Newport

Good but still fails on the craft ale front.

The Cask is mostly from Cornwall. The WiFi is mostly from BT.

A poured Pint of Tribute from St Austell Brewery in front of it's hand pump and clip

Perfectly Fine.

The Journey home reminded me why Public Transport isn’t really for the Public. Still relaxing day.
