Beers Of The Beano - Saturday 03 February 2024
It was a drizzly and blowy day in Newport and I knew something was up when there was a Bouncer on the door of the John Wallace Linton when I arrived in Newport. The beers looked good and there was a brew from Acorn on, with a German Flag on the pump clip. Sadly it was just coming on and it didn’t arrive while I was there. Then lots of Kilts arrived and I thought the Bouncer couldn’t be for them. Also, there were Police all over the place and there were lot’s of them. Asking the Bouncer, he sage that Sunderland were playing Newport County.
It later turned out it was Swindon and they lost 2-1 to County. And then about 100 or so of what looked like twelve year olds were marched down the road in front of the John Wallace Linton. The Swindon fans no doubt and boy did it make me feel old. Anyway on with the beer
The review
Centurion Porter - Nottingham Brewery - 4.9% ABV. B+ and a bit and a bit. Roasty, malty with burnt notes leading into a pleasing fruity bitterness. Quality #ale #beer #bier
3.4/5. What a great start to my Saturday Newport. Wales Rugby at 16:45 so the pubs will be packed. Need to get my Beanoing done asap.
The review
Ruby Jane - Ilkley Brewery - 4.0% ABV. B++, superior Mild Ale. Malty, fruity, nice body with with a pleasing gentle fruity bitter finish #ale #beer #bier
3.5/5. Newport now full of Kilts, Sunderland Fans and Police. Me, just listening to the @dailytechnewsshow
Mowing on to the Pen and Wig (Newport) where the Police were just leaving and the Pub itself was full of friendly Kilts drinking Fine Local Ales. For me it was Tomos and Lilford from the Vale to start.
The review
Southerndown Gold - Tomos and Lilford - 4.6% ABV. B+ and a bit, light and refreshing. Well balanced mixture of malt, fruit and bitterness. #ale #beer #bier
3.3/5. It’s Swindon not Sunderland fans. The Pen and Wig is half full of very friendly Scotland Fans. Dog friendly too.
Recently added to The Pen and Wig, this is a little corker. Not your standard Weissbier, soft and gently fruity with the 5.3% ABV very well hidden.
The review
Weissebier - ABK - 5.3% ABV. B+ and a bit, gentle, fruity and very easy drinking. Hazy with a proud, foamy head #ale #beer #bier
3.5/5. The sun has come out and I wish I had some washing now. It’s all Football and Rugby in The Pen and Wig.
Moving on as I was running very behind schedule and I was worried about getting a seat in Tiny Rebel Newport. I popped up to the Harbour Fish Bar, nowhere near the harbour, for an eco tray of Newport’s Finest Chips. However, I needn't have worried as I got my usual seat in Tiny Rebel. I only stayed for one as the WiFi was down and the Wales match was approaching.
The review
Well, I didn’t quite manage one but it was B+ and a bit.
